If it were damaged it could not be replaced. I would rather keep it than discount it.īecause of the unique nature of this set, I am not willing to ship it. This is a serious collector's kit that is very rare and in superb condition. Shell pack only - No stands or hardware are included! They have been in my smoke free humidity controlled studio since I purchased them 15 or so years ago. There is some pedal rash on the bass drum hoop so they were played by someone at some time. These are very rare and you will not likely find another one this clean. The shells are individually hand signed, numbered and dated with signatures by DW's John Good (Pres) and Don Lombardi (CEO). But, they still manage to possess ample attack, projection and ‘edge’ for louder or more aggressive musical styles. I’ve played DW Collectors maple and birch, Yamaha Recording Custom, Pearl Reference Pure, Sonor S Classix and Hi-Lite, Tama Star and other high end drums, and these really are the most totally unique, pure and melodic drums I’ve heard. Needless to say, these are the most ‘musical’ drums I’ve ever played. The shells really function beautifully on what are effectively 3 separate octaves. In general, all of the toms have 3 very clear tuning sweet-spots: at low, medium and high. But, what was most surprising was how much deep bottom end the hanging floor toms have! For DW Fast-tom sizes, they really can sound like a 14x14 and 16x16 at lower tunings. The bass drum has that perfect blend of clear attack and substantial bottom end ‘boom’, and the snare drum sounds a lot deeper than a 5”, but with that strong high that birch is so famous for. Just a really balanced, elegant and remarkable tone. I’d describe them as having the high end of birch, the mids of maple, and the bottom end of beech or walnut. Basically, they resonate FOR DAYS! And the tone - wow! - crystal clear and true. Thus, the structure of the wood is composed of thousands of microchambers, giving the wood a very distinct sound. However, the process is a bit more complicated (and fascinating): microorganisms have digested all of the sap, minerals and other ‘non-wood’ substances, so that what’s left is only wood fiber. I've researched it, and the chemical and biological process that the wood underwent has, as John says above, “cured” the wood. What a way to celebrate 30 years in the business." These drums are like no other in the world. Both the birch and the maple have a rare musical temperament due to the cold water curing the wood, but each also has its own unique tone. "It was practically an accident that these logs were even found, much less turned into musical treasures. The logs were harvested by underwater treasure hunters and used to create DW's Timeless Timber line, featuring 25th Anniversary Lake Superior Maple sets in 1997 and DW's 30th anniversary Lake Superior Birch sets in 2002). “In the late '90s, John Good - DW’s “woodologist” - learned of 500-year-old hardwood that had sunk in Lake Superior 100 years ago. The two USB ports are one shy of matching the Eee PC's three, but the Mini-Note has an ExpressCard slot for devices like a 3G ExpressCard for cellular broadband. HP has informed me that the touchpad was used because the Mini-Note's intended audience-K-12 students-prefer it over a pointing stick. I'm surprised HP didn't use a pointing stick as it did on its Compaq 2710p, in which the mouse buttons are properly placed-below the pointing device. The other way would be to use two hands to surf (one to left-click, the other for the touchpad and right-click button), which is awkward. In other words, when navigating with two fingers (with the index finger on the touchpad and your thumb on the left-click button), you have to use a third finger to click on the right mouse button. The placement of the mouse buttons, however, is questionable because they are adjacent to the touchpad. Typing up this review on the Mini-Note was almost as comfortable as it would have been on a mainstream laptop with a full-size keyboard and is hands-down better than the Eee PC's keyboard. There's barely any spacing between each key, giving the illusion of a bigger keyboard. HP did a nice job of masking the fact that the keyboard scale is 92 percent, not full size. By contrast, the HTC Shift sports an 800-by-480 resolution, but because of the Shift's smaller screen size, HTC had to put in a resolution toggle switch (to 1,024-by-600), allowing users to fit more content on the screen. Further, the size of the screen keeps text or images at its native 1,280-by-768 resolution from looking unbearably tiny. "Frameless" refers to the glossy coating on the screen that extends to the screen's borders, making it look like a miniature HDTV, complete with a pair of speakers along the sides. The 8.9-inch screen is bigger and brighter than the Eee PC's 7-inch display. The masterful design is carried over to the interior, where a frameless screen and a wonderful keyboard reside. Although the Mini-Note isn't pocketable like the Fujitsu LifeBook U810, carrying it around the country or the city is still an absolute joy. Not as light as the 2.2-pound ASUS Eee PC 4G, it weighs 2.8 pounds with the three-cell battery and 3.2 pounds with the six-cell battery that my test unit came with. The Mini-Note is about as well made as the HTC Shift but costs only half as much. It makes this tiny laptop look like a darker, miniature Apple MacBook Pro. The anodized aluminum that HP draped all over the exterior is absolutely gorgeous. The Mini-Note is designed to look like a $2,000 machine. My configuration was relatively expensive others start as low as $499-a price that HP had to nail down in order for the Mini-Note to fly. Even more compelling, however, is that this miniature device can be used by kindergarteners or top-level executives alike, and is affordable to most families with schoolchildren. It sports a sexy, 3-pound design, has features similar to the Eee PC, and offers a variety of operating systems to choose from. The HP 2133 Mini-Note PC ($749 direct) has the potential to be just that. Now, manufacturers are mobilizing to create an Eee PC "killer," so to speak. The Eee PC is a sleek, 2.2-pound ultraportable that costs less than $400-something the UMPC platform had promised but failed to deliver. It didn't take long for PC makers to realize the gold mine ASUS struck with its Eee PC 4G. Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The partnership involves 21 federal, state, and local conservation, land management, and fire agencies, including the U.S. In 2008, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team formed with twin goals of reducing fuels in the “wildland-urban interface” and preparing communities for wildfires. In the weeks and months that followed, land managers and community leaders in the Lake Tahoe Basin mobilized. It destroyed 254 homes and left a terrible path of destruction. In June 2007, near the edge of South Lake Tahoe, the Angora Fire ignited and raged through wildlands and residential neighborhoods. The efforts in the South Lake Tahoe area took hold after an earlier wildfire season. This Summit work is led by Frisch of the Sierra Business Council Glenda Humiston, vice president, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and Bill Tripp, director of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy for the Karuk Tribe Department of Natural Resources. Encouraging investments in these types of approaches has been a key focus of the Summit’s Empowering Productive and Resilient Landscapes work group and will continue into 2022. Such strategies are among the approaches to wildfire prevention and resiliency that will be explored during the 2021 California Economic Summit in Monterey on Nov. The preventive strategies in the South Lake Tahoe area took many years and the cooperative work of numerous organizations and individuals. It is about resources and the will to take action.” “We know what works,” said Steve Frisch, president of the Sierra Business Council. The work stands now as an important template for creating a more safe and resilient state. These efforts included vegetation thinning and prescribed fire to reduce dangerous fuels on the landscape, as well as home-hardening and other measures. Extensive pre-fire interventions helped firefighters in their efforts to save many threatened homes and structures in the South Lake Tahoe area. The evidence can be seen in maps showing where this summer’s massive Caldor Fire burned – and where it didn’t. In the South Lake Tahoe area, more than a dozen years of hard work and collaboration helped save residential areas from a terrible fate during this year’s wildfire season. 20 Additional Player Colors to Choose from.īe sure to follow Hammerwatch II on Steam and join us on Discord for all the latest updates.Hammerwatch: Anniversary Edition – the original Hammerwatch, now remastered. The Chronicles Edition includes the following: Quest, collect items, fight new enemies, and go up against challenging bosses - all in four-player co-op.Ī special edition of Hammerwatch II, Hammerwatch II: The Chronicles Edition, is available for preorder for $39.99 and will be available in retail stores and digitally at launch. English composer Thomas Adès’s recent opera, which premiered in 2004 at the Royal Opera House of Covent Garden, offers a uniquely twenty-first century take on the play. Listen for the sudden ferocity of the storm (5:37). Tchaikovsky’s tone poem The Tempest begins and ends with the musical depiction of a calmly undulating sea. Here the aria is sung by Renee Fleming: In Act 4 of Verdi’s opera Otello, just before she is strangled by the jealous Othello, Desdemona sings a quiet prayer for all who suffer ( Ave Maria). Our means secure us, and our mere defects King Lear Overture has all of the romantic, schizophrenic drama of Symphony fantastique. The dissonances following the 9:00 mark would have sounded even more jarring in the 1830s. I love the noisiness of this piece and its slightly deranged quality. Throughout his innovative career, Berlioz was interested in expanding the orchestra and combining instruments in shocking new ways. You might have noticed the influence of the recitative music from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in the opening. We hear Lear’s increasing insanity as his theme merges with the storm music (10:49). In his memoirs, Berlioz outlined the program he followed while writing this overture, from the introduction (representing the entrance of the king) to the fast allegro section (the storm). Also notice the musical depiction of a braying donkey (3:07):Ĭould you hear the stubborn, proud character of King Lear in Berlioz’s music? Maybe you also sensed the pure Cordelia in the oboe solo in the introduction (2:47). Listen for all the subtle tricks and surprises in the fairy music, such as unexpected, “wrong” chords and out of place voices. We hear the magic of the forest and the scurrying fairies who interfere hilariously in the lives of the other characters. Mendelssohn’s overture captures vividly the atmosphere of the play. Sixteen years later, he composed incidental music for the play, which included the Scherzo, Nocturne and Wedding March. The Merchant of Venice A Midsummer Night’s Dreamįelix Mendelssohn was 17 years old when he wrote the famous A Midsummer Night’s Dream concert overture in 1826. And you, brides and bridegrooms all, Now let’s celebrate with some more music inspired by the Bard of Avon: A few months ago we heard Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet tone poem. Throughout history, Shakespeare’s plays have been a rich source of inspiration for composers. Historians believe that today marks the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare. They have rings stretching down around their legs, and the “necklaces” are broken, highlighting their strong chests. This pattern showcases intense markings that are darker than the base coat. Similarly, the most common patterns on an American Shorthair are tabby, solid, or tortoiseshell.Īmerican Shorthair cats are best known for their black and silver classic tabby (swirl) markings. The most common American Shorthair cat colors you might encounter are black, brown, and red. There are around 80 different color combinations of American Shorthairs that cat associations recognize. They absolutely are! They’re simply more unique, which to some might be even more appealing. That doesn’t mean that if your American Shorthair isn’t one of the most common, they aren’t part of the breed. What colors do American Shorthairs come in?Īmerican Shorthair cats can come in a range of coat colors and patterns, though you might recognize some more than others. Though they might have been fierce hunters in their past lives, the American Shorthair cat has become well-accustomed to a lavish lifestyle of canned food, scratching posts, and catnip. Their fur is plushy to the touch, and comforting to pet.Īmerican Shorthairs are medium-sized cats, and without proper exercise, they can become overweight. Their coats are short, thick, and dense, and has helped protect them from New England weather both centuries ago and today. These features helped them become extremely skilled hunters, which preserved their breed. They look very compact due to their strong legs and muscular body. The American Shorthair cat has an athletic build with proportionate body parts, a large head, and large, wide-set eyes. But did they ever have to fend for themselves to eat? Not once: They made themselves comfortable indoors! What does an American Shorthair look like? Were they still catching rodents from time to time in the house? Likely. Instead of keeping the barn in check, they took to the homes, transitioning to a more relaxed lifestyle. This breed went from barn cats that kept the original American colonies clean and rat-free to well-respected house cats. Those that were able to adapt resulted in today’s American Shorthair. Over the next few hundred years, these cats survived the harsh New England weather with their thick coats and hunting instincts. Records show their ancestors were cats that came over on boats with European settlers and then helped to maintain vermin control in the colonies. The American Shorthair can trace their lineage back to the Mayflower. What are the origins of the American Shorthair?Īmerican Shorthairs are often compared to Domestic Shorthairs-AKA mixed breed short-haired cats-but are, in fact, their own distinct breed. While their coats come in various colors and patterns, their personality holds up across the breed, making them easy to fall in love with. The American Shorthair is the breed you might think of when you think of the perfect family cat. (We kid-please keep your kitties indoors!) And make sure to thank your American Shorthair for all the hard work they put into the catch. These cats are athletic, natural-born hunters whose love language is gift-giving, so don’t be surprised if a little mouse shows up on your doorstep. They get along with just about any animal or person they come across. This cat is treasured for their adaptable and friendly nature. The American Shorthair cat is a beloved and popular breed with many fond followers. |
